When the Hartford Circus Fire of 1944 occurred, Horace Wells' invention was put to use to help the injured and wounded. Doctor Curtiss B. Hickcox, the head of anesthesiology at Municipal Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut administered anesthesia to patients from the fire.
